Communities Against Rabies:

Working together to eliminate rabies for everyone.

A grassroots movement for global change.

Every nine minutes, someone dies from rabies. At GARC, we are committed to a rabies-free future, and we believe that eliminating rabies starts with our communities. Through our Communities Against Rabies (CAR) program, we are building and strengthening lasting capacity through innovative tools, expert guidance, and community-driven initiatives to empower people to lead and sustain their rabies elimination efforts.

The CAR program is the only global rabies program focusing on the ‘last mile’ of rabies elimination. We believe that local actors who have established trust in their communities, are best placed to track rabies cases, raise awareness, and promote vaccination campaigns. We support communities with a clear, step-by-step, science-based approach:

  • Strengthening Individual Capacity by recognizing graduates of selected GEP courses as Dog Health Champions.
  • Strengthening Organizational Capacity by providing hands on training and once the knowledge and approaches are being deployed in their community, recognizing organizations as Rabies Centers of Excellence (RCE).
  • Ongoing technical assistance and support to strengthen collaboration alongside financial assistance in select countries and ongoing learning opportunities.

Through the CAR program, communities gain the tools, knowledge, and support they need to eliminate rabies for everyone.
