Interview with Rabies Ambassador Larissa: A Passionate Advocate for Rabies Awareness and Safe Travel

Introduction

Kerenza, GARC’s Outreach Manager, catches up with Larissa Kolasinski - a dedicated Rabies Ambassador for the Global Alliance for Rabies Control (GARC). With a strong passion for animal welfare and public health, Larissa has made it her mission to raise awareness about rabies prevention and the importance of safe travel practices, particularly in rabies-endemic areas. In this interview, Larissa shares her journey, insights, and valuable tips for staying safe while exploring the world.

Kerenza: Why Did You Become a Rabies Ambassador?

Larissa: “My journey as a Rabies Ambassador began with a life-changing experience while I was running in Kuwait and got attacked by a pack of dogs. Fortunately, I learnt about rabies in school so I immediately got to a hospital for treatment. However, living in the U.S. is a bit like living in a bubble. As I traveled though, I became more aware of the struggles communities and dogs face in other countries.”

Larissa’s encounters with street dogs and the realization of the stark differences in how dogs are treated globally motivated her to join the cause: "I wanted to do something to help, and becoming a Rabies Ambassador was a way for me to make a difference."

Kerenza: Why is Rabies Awareness Important?

Larissa: "Rabies is 99% fatal but 100% preventable." Larissa emphasizes.

We delved into this topic a little more with a rapid back and forth discussion about the importance of prevention in communities around the world. Larissa highlighted that while the U.S. is fortunate to be largely free of dog rabies, the disease remains a threat through wildlife like bats, raccoons, and foxes. And went on to share a recent story from Washington State that came up in the news. ”In fact, there have been a total of 12 rabid bats found so far this year”. Her final point really brought this part of the chat together nicely: "It’s a reminder that rabies is still out there, even in unexpected places."

Kerenza: Are Dogs Victims Too?

Larissa is quick to point out that dogs are not just carriers of rabies—they are victims too. "Dogs suffer tremendously from, and because of, rabies, and they deserve humane treatment and protection," she says. Responsible dog ownership, including regular vaccinations, is crucial in preventing the spread of rabies. Larissa notes that "In countries where rabies is endemic, people often fear dogs, which can lead to poor treatment. It’s vital to change that narrative and protect these animals."

Kerenza: Do you have any Tips for people who may be travelling? How can they prevent bites and reduce the risk of rabies, especially when travelling to rabies-endemic countries?

As an avid traveler, Larissa has firsthand experience navigating rabies-endemic areas. She offers practical advice for staying safe: "Always know where the nearest hospital is and carry a fully charged phone with photos of your passport and insurance. Avoid walking in dimly lit areas at night, and if you’re running, stick to crowded roads where cars and motorcycles can deter stray dogs." Larissa’s personal rule when traveling: "I wouldn’t run down empty streets in other countries like I might in the U.S. It’s all about being aware of your surroundings."

Larissa also shares a tip for hikers: "If you’re in the Alps or similar areas, keep a safe distance from sheepdogs, watch for signage, and if you’re biking, get off your bike when approaching these dogs." Her advice is grounded in experience and a deep understanding of the risks involved.
